Des Dutch Essenhaus in Shreve

It was a quiet place for an informal family gathering with relatives visiting from out of state.

The only reason I'm giving it a three is because the service was excellent. My son puked the entire way back to Cleveland, and my daughter threw up while we were there. No stomach bug or anything. Once they got that food out of their system they were fine.

The people working here are so nice, but the food, unfortunately, is lousy. Could it have been an off night? I don't know. The potatoes were runny and flavorless, the pork roast was tough, the broasted chicken was overcooked, and the peanut butter pie was almost unrecognizable as peanut butter. My husband had me smell it because he couldn't taste any peanut butter. It was just goop. My rhubarb pie was good, but too cold. You can do better Des Dutch Essenhaus! I just know it!

We had lunch there and the food was good, but we were the only people in the entire restaurant. We had the open faced turkey sandwitch and it was ok, but I think there are other places that I like better.

What a great place for comfort food. With a spacious dining room, shopping in attached retail space and cozy decor, this may become your families favorite weekly stop. The staff is attentive and food is great. Did I mention the homemade bread? So yummy.

Food was bland. They were bragging how everything was homemade. We had the Saturday night buffet ( only 5 selections that were screaming for seasoning )and my wife ordered off the menu which was served to her after the rest of us were finished eating. It took over 30 minutes for her food to arrive and there were only two other tables eating in the restaurant. The food needed lots of seasoning and the rolls were stale. The staff were friendly and polite and the restaurant was clean. The worst part of the experience was the bill. $76 dollars before any tip for three buffets and a turkey dinner three iced teas and a water. We will not return to this place.

We used to go here years ago when I was a kid, and we were always blown away by the quality of the Essenhaus's Amish food. A few years ago we were back in the area and decided to see if it was as good as remembered. We were all more than pleased to discover that it was. This place really blows some of the other "Amish" restaurants out of the water. It's smaller than many, but very high quality. Suggestions: the family style dinner is great for groups. You pay per head and they bring out platters of food. Their fried chicken is out of this world. The salad bar is unusually good; it's not just a bowl of iceberg lettuce and some cheese, and everything really does taste homemade. The pies are always great too; they usually have some interesting local specialties along with the usual apple.Update: I managed to get back here (I live 40 miles away) and ordered the apple dumpling with WHIPPED cream. It was the best apple dumpling I've ever eaten in my entire life, and the cream was real.

I had the hot bar for lunch, and it was very filling and delicious! The mashed potatoes tasted just like how my grandmother used to make them. My server was very kind and on top of everything. Restaurant is connected to a nice shop as well, where you can find candy, baked goods, and crafty items. I would definitely visit again!

The servers are friendly and the food is delicious. I love their salad bar and the soup choices. The dinners we've gotten have been very good especially the broasted chicken and mashed potatoes.

Best sausage gravy ever, mush was yummy eggs and bacon cooked perfect even the bread, biscuits, and orange juice was great!!! Service was awesome too!!! I highly recommend this place!!!

The owner opened the side door so my mother (who had just had a knee replacement surgery) could get in easier. Then he worked for about 15 minutes trying to get a toy to work to make my 2 year old toddler happy. Food is always great. Great place for families.

So we have to say that we love the food for the most part here. It's like always Thanksgiving here. We enjoy ordering the family meals. They give large portions and it is definitely tasty. Our server was awesome this time around. She was very on it. Our drinks were constantly full, she checked in on us regularly. But I have to take stars off for two things. It is very inconsistent here and we almost left after waiting for almost 10 minutes to be seated. There were 6 employees at the counter talking and they saw us wait by the "wait to be seated sign" but none of them seemed to feel like it was their job to seat us or get someone who could. Then the manager/owner? Came out and saw us and went on with other work instead. We decided to leave and he caught us at the door to convince us to stay. It's a nice quaint location, but we have had some of the best and worst experiences here. I wish that it was more consistent.

The meatloaf special was delicious. Great food and service. Just ate here for the first time and will be back when next in the area.

I have eaten here many times and have always been very happy with the food, but this last time I didn't care for it. The noodles were doughy, the potatoes were not good. But, I will return again. I won't give up on it because this was the first time I had a bad meal there.

Staff is friendly & attentive. They keep everything clean. The soup & salad bar is terrific! Their cinnamon rolls are amazing! Good food, but a little more variety would be nice. Prices are just ok.

All of the food was amazing!! And reasonably priced! Will go back next time we're in the area!
